Listening, Viewing and Responding to Texts

Authors and illustrators work together to share a message with us. We love the stories they tell. We have to think beyond what happens to understand what the author wants to teach us.

Families:

In the book Last Stop on Market Street written by Matt De La Pena and illustrated by Christian Robinson, a boy named C.J. and his grandmother ride the bus one day after church. They meet many people along the way, and C.J. has lots of questions.

As you listen to the book together, invite your child to think about what the author wants to teach us. The illustrations in this book along with the words work together to help us understand Matt De La Pena’s message. It is the author who is reading the book today!

It might be fun to take a “picture walk” through the book a second time to notice the details in the illustrations as you talk together about the author’s message.
