no gaps in between toothpicks.<\/li>\n<li>If the die shows a 1 or 2, the player does not take any toothpicks, and the turn passes to the other player.<\/li>\n<li>The first player to make all four shapes (triangle-3 toothpicks, quadrilateral-4 toothpicks, pentagon-5 toothpicks, hexagon-6 toothpicks) wins the game.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Game 2 &#8211; Pass the \u201cPeas\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>(adapted from <a href=\"https:\/\/nrich.maths.org\/1247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nrich maths.org<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>This is a game for two or more players.<\/p>\n<h3>Materials:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A plastic cup<\/li>\n<li>2 small objects (e.g., dried peas, stones, coins, counters, popcorn kernels)<\/li>\n<li>2 copies of the game board below (or <a href=\"https:\/\/nrich.maths.org\/content\/01\/01\/game\/Pass%20the%20Peas%20Grid%203.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can download one here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Paper and a pencil each for calculating and recording scores<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-70881\" src=\"http:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/athome\/files\/2020\/04\/Grid-picture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/athome\/files\/2020\/04\/Grid-picture.png 639w, https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/athome\/files\/2020\/04\/Grid-picture-294x300.png 294w, https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/athome\/files\/2020\/04\/Grid-picture-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/athome\/files\/2020\/04\/Grid-picture-165x168.png 165w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Instructions:<\/h3>\n<p>All players begin by writing 50 on their score sheets.<br \/>\nThe first player puts two \u201cpeas\u201d (whatever objects you are using) into a plastic cup.<br \/>\nThey toss the \u201cpeas\u201d onto the game board, and add the two numbers that the \u201cpeas\u201d land on.<br \/>\nThey then take this sum away from 50 and write down the answer on their score sheet.<br \/>\nThe next player takes a turn.<br \/>\nAfter the first turn, the players start with the new number written on their score sheet and take the sum of the numbers away from that, rather than from 50.<\/p>\n<p>The first player to reach zero wins.<\/p>\n<h3>Adaptations:<\/h3>\n<p>Change the starting number.<br \/>\nChange it to 3 \u201cpeas\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Game 3 &#8211; paper. If you don&#8217;t have any, just draw some lines down and across some blank paper to form squares. One hundred squares (10 by 10) makes a good size game board, but you can use a smaller or larger grid if you prefer.<\/p>\n<p>Two players, using two different colours, take turns to circle a &#8216;cross-road&#8217; on the grid.<br \/>\nThe aim is to make a line of four, across, down or diagonally.<br \/>\nEach &#8216;cross-road&#8217; can only be used once.<br \/>\nTry to block the other player&#8217;s path.<br \/>\nEach time you make a line-of-four draw a line through it so it can be counted as a point.<br \/>\nWhen all the &#8216;cross-roads&#8217; have been used, the player with the most points wins.<\/p>\n<p>In the example above, each player has had 10 turns so far.
