Nature surrounds us with beauty and wonder. In ancient times, people tried to explain the wonders of nature with stories.<\/p>\n<p>Pourquoi stories are told to help explain why things are the way they are. Pourquoi is a French word that means \u2018why\u2019 &#8211; so these are \u2018stories that explain why\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Often, pourquoi stories focus on explaining features of animals or parts of the natural world. Questions like: What is lightning and thunder? Where does the sun go every day? Why do tigers have stripes?<\/p>\n<p>Today, we know the answers to these questions, but we can still appreciate the stories our ancestors told to help them understand the world around them.<\/p>\n<h3>Your task for today is to choose a pourquoi story to read:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historymuseum.ca\/cmc\/exhibitions\/aborig\/fp\/fpz2f24e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Porcupine Got Quills<\/a> &#8211; an Anishinaabe story<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/worldstories.org.uk\/reader\/why-the-cheetahs-cheeks-are-stained\/english\/880#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Cheetah\u2019s Cheeks are Stained<\/a> &#8211; a Zulu story<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/worldstories.org.uk\/reader\/why-the-sun-and-moon-live-in-the-sky\/english\/470#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky<\/a> &#8211; a Nigerian story<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After you read think about these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the problem in the story you read?<\/li>\n<li>What was the world like before the story problem was introduced?<\/li>\n<li>How did the problem lead to a lasting change in the world or in a character?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Share your thinking with a family member.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Opportunities:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Some pourquoi stories explain traditions or \u2018why we do things the way we do\u2019, like this story from the Oneida Nation: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneidaindiannation.com\/how-the-clans-were-chosen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How the Clans Were Chosen<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world is an amazing home.
