{"id":1032,"date":"2020-06-01T15:13:19","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T19:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/continuing-education\/?page_id=1032"},"modified":"2026-02-25T22:09:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T03:09:28","slug":"reach-ahead-high-school-program-online","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/continuing-education\/summer-school\/reach-ahead-high-school-program-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Reach Ahead to High School Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">General Learning Strategies (GLS1O) for Grade 8 WRDSB Students<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <strong>secondary grade 9 <\/strong><\/span><b>credit course (GLS1O)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explores learning strategies and helps students become more independent learners while increasing their personal management skills, both in school and in other contexts. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By completing the Reach Ahead program, students will start Grade 9 feeling confident to succeed in high school and having already earned a credit (<\/span><b>GLS 10<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Program runs Monday, June 29, 2026 &#8211; Friday, July 24th, 2026\u00a0 \u00a0(note that Wednesday, July 1st is the Canada Day holiday = no school)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programs are available either in-person or through the e-Learn option<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-person classes run from 8:30 am to 3:00pm at a local secondary school (Huron Heights SS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Only WRDSB students <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">currently<\/span> registered in a WRDSB school in 2025\/2026 are eligible for this Reach Ahead program<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registration opens March 23rd, 2026, and will close May 22nd, 2026<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; text-decoration: underline;\">Important Note:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 <\/b><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">for those considering the eLearn option \u2013 students are only able to access their WRDSB Google accounts from within Canada. Students traveling internationally will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> be able to access their WRDSB Google account while outside of Canada.\u00a0 The ability to access your course work through your WRDSB Google account is absolutely necessary for successful completion of an eLearn credit.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Reach Ahead Summer School Routes\u00a0 will be availabe in early June on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stswr.ca\/ppf\/4-6-summer-school-transportation\">STSWR\u00a0<\/a>website.<\/h3>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>GLS 10 Course Expectations:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Highlights of the curriculum expectations include:\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">develop learning strategies and skills to support your transition into high school<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">identify and use a variety of literacy skills and strategies to improve reading, writing, and oral communication in everyday contexts;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">identify and use a variety of numeracy skills and strategies to improve their practical application of mathematics in everyday contexts;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">apply knowledge of their personal skills and learning strengths to develop strategies for success in secondary school;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">identify and describe personal-management skills required for success, and explain their use to help maximize learning;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">identify and describe the knowledge and skills necessary for successful interpersonal relations and teamwork;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">apply their knowledge of school, work, and community involvement opportunities to develop a personal learning plan;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Expectations for Students:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Students are expected to participate daily for the entirety of the program.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In person classes will run from 8:30 am &#8211; 3:00 pm every day<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Attend whole group and small lessons at scheduled times every day with their teachers and classmates<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Attendance will be taken<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Important Note:<\/span> <span style=\"color: #008080;\">for those considering the eLearn option \u2013 students are only able to access their Google accounts from within Canada. Students traveling internationally will not be able to access their Google accounts until their return to Canada.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Registration Information:<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Parents\/Guardians that are interested in this summer school opportunity for their student should contact their students\u2019 homeschool Elementary School Guidance Contact, Special Education Resource Teacher or Administrator (Principal \/ Vice-Principal).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<h4><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Transportation Information:<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<p>Bussing will be provided for all of our Elementary and Secondary students.\u00a0 However, please note that Summer School buses cover a large geographic area and parents\/guardians will need to make arrangements to get their children to and from centralized bus stops.
