{"id":10,"date":"2017-03-31T13:51:55","date_gmt":"2017-03-31T13:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/?page_id=10"},"modified":"2025-09-16T13:14:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T17:14:12","slug":"huron-natural-area-outdoor-and-environmental-education-centre","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/our-programs\/nature-center-programs\/huron-natural-area-outdoor-and-environmental-education-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Huron Natural Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centre<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/LE5yu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huron Natural Area (HNA)<\/a> is a joint venture between the City of Kitchener, the Waterloo Region District School Board, and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. It is Kitchener\u2019s largest natural area and over million dollars was invested by the City of Kitchener to upgrade the 107 hectare site, specifically to support outdoor and environmental education programming.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 1990s, many WRDSB staff have contributed to the success of our HNA.\u00a0 During the summer of 2008, our Board located a portable classroom to the site.\u00a0 Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro generously assumed the cost of connecting the portable classroom to the city\u2019s electrical grid.\u00a0 In September 2008, the outdoor and environmental education programs for grades 2 and 3 classes, formerly offered at Bechtel Park, were relocated to the HNA.<\/p>\n<p>The programs operate for six weeks in the fall and six weeks in the spring, contingent on grant funding from local charitable organizations.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fef.td.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TD Friends of the Environment Foundation<\/a> has consistently provided this necessary funding for over 15 years.\u00a0 Financial support has also been provided over the years by the K-W Community Foundation and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shell.ca\/en\/environment-society.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shell Environmental Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About 200 classes or 4,000 students per year can experience the quality environmental education experiences that our HNA provides.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Staff<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff at HNA change seasonally. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a WRDSB teacher with a trip to HNA, you will be contacted by Allan Woodhouse with your initial trip information before the season begins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Our seasonal staff will reach out with further information in the week prior to the start of programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristy Elinesky and Alexis Pownall are the OEE interpreters at HNA for the 201-2020 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We offer programs for Grade 2 and Grade 3 students at this site. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>Gr. 2 Growth and Change in Animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, students will do a pond invertebrate study or a field insect study and learn about metamorphosis. Students will also go on a short nature hike looking for the other types of animals (mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish) and the signs they leave behind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>Gr. 3 Growth and Change in Plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program students will go on a nature hike searching for different types of plants and discussing their seasonal changes and adaptations. For instance, in the fall we\u00a0<\/span>discuss why some trees change colour and lose their leaves and search for different examples of seed adaptation (eg. \u2018Hitchikers\u2019 like burrs or \u2018Wind-catchers\u2019 like milkweed seeds).
