To help families get outside safely, the Waterloo Region District School Board\u2019s Outdoor and Environmental Education Department is organizing our 2nd annual Backyard Bird Count. Counting birds can be done easily from a backyard, balcony or window. With a few simple resources, everyone can enjoy a bit of nature this Earth Day and do something to help Waterloo Region\u2019s beautiful birds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UDbcACzb12M\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Last year WRDSB students observed over 34,000 birds!\u00a0 Can we see more this year?<\/h2>\n<p>The Backyard Bird Count is a now a five-day event that engages students of all ages in the WRDSB. It creates a real-time snapshot of the birds that live here, showing us how many there are and where they live.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone can participate, from beginners to experts. You can count for as little as 15 minutes on a single day, or for as long as you like each day of the event. It\u2019s free, fun and easy \u2013 and it helps the birds!<\/p>\n<p>The Backyard Bird Count is modelled after the \u201cGreat Backyard Bird Count,\u201d an annual event run in February, jointly sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Audubon and Canadian partner, Birds Canada.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4ca232;\"><strong>THE BACKYARD BIRD COUNT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4ca232;\"><strong>Who:<\/strong><\/span> Anyone in the WRDSB can participate.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4ca232;\"><strong>What:<\/strong> <\/span>Count what birds you see, how many (best guess), and where (Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, or Township).<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4ca232;\"><strong>Where:<\/strong><\/span> From your backyard, balcony, porch or window!<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4ca232;\"><strong>When:<\/strong><\/span> 8AM on April 22 until 4PM on April 26.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #4ca232;\"><strong>How:<\/strong><\/span> Submit your results electronically using this google <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/QVdJaAuepQSaswod9\">form<\/a>.\u00a0 See results live on our website <a href=\"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/citizen-science\/wrdsb-backyard-bird-count-2\/results-2021\/\">here.<\/a> Share pictures via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. #WRDSBbirdwatch<\/p>\n<p>All participants who submit observations will get a certificate of appreciation from our OEE Department.<\/p>\n<p>To help prepare students for this fun activity, the Outdoor and Environmental Education Department has prepared a few resources for our students.
