{"id":4505,"date":"2020-04-14T15:04:32","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T19:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/?page_id=4505"},"modified":"2021-04-14T16:49:30","modified_gmt":"2021-04-14T20:49:30","slug":"backyard-bird-count-instructions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/citizen-science\/wrdsb-backyard-bird-count-2\/backyard-bird-count-instructions\/","title":{"rendered":"Backyard Bird Count Instructions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #4ca232;\"><b>HOW TO COUNT THE BIRDS:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Count birds from your backyard, balcony, porch or\u00a0 window for AT LEAST 15 minutes, but you may count as long as you wish during the count period starting at 8AM on April 22, and finishing 4PM on April 26.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your best guess of what species you saw, how many individual birds you saw, and how long you watched.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter your observations online <a href=\"http:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/wrdsb-backyard-bird-count\/backyard-bird-count-observations\/\">here<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or complete the attached paper form and share it with us. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit a new checklist for:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each new day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each new location<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same day, same location if counted at a different time of day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When submitting your observations, you will be submitting using a google form and you will have to sign i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n using your WRDSB login.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first question will be \u2018Where did you count birds?\u2019 Please pick from the drop-down menu either Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge or the appropriate Township.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will be asked for the date &#8211; please pick the date from the drop down menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We would like to know when you observed your birds &#8211; please tell us when you started observing and when you stopped.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the form you will be given a list of the most common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yard <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birds in the Waterloo Region District School Board.\u00a0 If you only observed them, but didn\u2019t count how many individuals, put an x in the box.\u00a0 If you counted how many individuals of each species please enter the number observed into the box. If you observed a species that is not listed, please write it in as an \u2018Other\u2019, give the name and enter how many.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please share with us your experience.\u00a0 Write a short description of what you did in the comments section.\u00a0 Did you see something you weren\u2019t expecting? Were you surprised by anything?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are done, click the \u2018Submit\u2019 button!
