{"id":4665,"date":"2020-05-12T15:41:43","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T19:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/?page_id=4665"},"modified":"2020-05-26T16:25:31","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T20:25:31","slug":"backyard-bug-blitz-instructions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/citizen-science\/wrdsb-backyard-bug-blitz-2020-3\/backyard-bug-blitz-instructions\/","title":{"rendered":"Backyard Bug Blitz Instructions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><b>HOW TO OBSERVE \u201cBUGS\u201d:<\/b><\/h1>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observe bugs from your backyard, balcony, porch or\u00a0 window for AT LEAST 15 minutes, but you may count as long as you wish during the count period starting at 8AM on May 25, and finishing 4PM on May 29th.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your best guess of what species you saw.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note what the habitat was where you found the bugs (Inside, Porch\/Balcony, lawn, old field, vegetable garden, decorative garden, forest or wetland\/pond).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Describe how you found them (did you just look with your eyes or did you do something extra like leave a light on overnight to attract things).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter your observations online <a href=\"http:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/wrdsb-backyard-bug-blitz-2020\/submit-observations\/\">here<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or complete the attached paper form and share it with us. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit a new checklist for:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each new day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each new habitat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same day, same habitat if counted at a different time of day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When submitting your observations, you will be submitting using a google form<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 If you are a student in the WRDSB please use your student email address when submitting your checklist.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first question will be the \u2018Date\u2019.\u00a0 Please pick the correct date for your checklist from the drop-down menu.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will be asked to describe the habitat, please pick one from the menu.\u00a0 If you searched two habitats, submit what you found in each place as a different list.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We would like to know how much effort you put into finding bugs.\u00a0 There are a few simple things you can do that will increase the number of bugs you find (like leaving a light on overnight or using an \u2018attractant\u2019 or making a trap), please check all that apply from the list.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the form you will be given a list of the most common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yard bugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Waterloo Region District School Board, \u2018check\u2019 all that you found.\u00a0 If you observed a species that is not listed, please write it in as an \u2018Other\u2019, give the name you know or describe what it looks like in as much detail as you can.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please share with us your experience.\u00a0 Write a short description of what you did in the comments section.\u00a0 Did you see something you weren\u2019t expecting?\u00a0 Were you surprised by anything?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are done, click the \u2018Submit\u2019 button! You should see a confirmation page that will give you the option of changing your submission if you think you made an error.\u00a0 You should also get an email summary of your observations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please share a photo of your bug hunting experience (especially interesting bug pictures) using the &#8220;Share a bug&#8221; form.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you observe bugs again during the count period, submit another checklist!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please read and remember to follow our \u2018Bug Blitz Ethics\u2019 guidelines (they are very similar to our Bird Watching Ethics) so that we can all participate in a way that is safe, not only for ourselves but our community and nature as well.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW TO OBSERVE \u201cBUGS\u201d: Observe bugs from your backyard, balcony, porch or\u00a0 window for AT LEAST 15 minutes, but you may count as long as you wish during the count period starting at 8AM on May 25, and finishing 4PM on May 29th.
