{"id":139,"date":"2011-01-06T16:37:19","date_gmt":"2011-01-06T21:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/outdooredguys.wordpress.com\/?p=139"},"modified":"2011-01-06T16:37:19","modified_gmt":"2011-01-06T21:37:19","slug":"the-dawn-coyote-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/2011\/01\/06\/the-dawn-coyote-song\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dawn Coyote Song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, as I filled the feeders at Wrigley Corners, I was treated to a delightful serenade by Coyote\u2019s (<em>Canis latrans<\/em>) living behind Miller Lake.<\/p>\n<p>The winter sun rises late these days, I usually fill my feeders as it drifts aloft, a break in the clouds put a rosy blush on the snow as the Coyote continued it\u2019s falsetto howl.<\/p>\n<p>I find the mournful melody hard to describe, though it is higher pitched and more broken up than that of the wolf.\u00a0 In The Clever Coyote, Stanley P. Young aptly describes the Coyote\u2019s cry as a \u201cprolonged howl which the animal let out and then ran after and bit into small pieces.\u201d It is a sound distinctly wild and sorrowful, but nuanced&#8230; more akin to words than wails.<\/p>\n<p>By the time I finished filling the feeders the Coyote had finished its song.\u00a0 The female Coyote will be coming into heat soon, ready to reproduce by the end of January.\u00a0 I know of three dens near Wrigley Corners and will visit them soon to see if any of last years females have returned.\u00a0 Pups will be born in April and by June will be traipsing about, learning to be good Coyote\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that the Coyote calling this morning is the one that recently left tracks in my Butterfly Garden and has a runway (what we call a preferred route) through Wrigley Forest.\u00a0 I have regularly seen Wild Turkey\u2019s near Miller lake and wonder if the Coyote\u2019s have found them too.<\/p>\n<p>I wish the Coyote luck, he\u2019s going to need it.\u00a0 Bounties have been placed on Coyote\u2019s across North America since 1825, only two years after they were formally described by science\u2026 basically, as long as we\u2019ve known Coyote\u2019s existed we\u2019ve persecuted them.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to hear the Coyote howl follow the link:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soundboard.com\/sb\/Wild_Coyote_sounds.aspx\">http:\/\/www.soundboard.com\/sb\/Wild_Coyote_sounds.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to learn more about Coyotes in Canada check out Hinterland who\u2019s who:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hww.ca\/hww2.asp?id=88\">http:\/\/www.hww.ca\/hww2.asp?id=88<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, as I filled the feeders at Wrigley Corners, I was treated to a delightful serenade by Coyote\u2019s (Canis latrans) living behind Miller Lake.
