{"id":2976,"date":"2015-01-19T09:40:45","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T14:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/outdooredguys.wordpress.com\/?p=2976"},"modified":"2015-01-19T09:40:45","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T14:40:45","slug":"winter-nest-box-surprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schools.wrdsb.ca\/environmental-education\/2015\/01\/19\/winter-nest-box-surprise\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Nest Box Surprise!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week while studying Winter Birds we decided to check out one of the nest boxes in the field.\u00a0 &#8220;Will there be a bird in the box?&#8221; I asked.\u00a0 Probably not, the class replied.\u00a0 &#8220;Will there be a nest in the box?&#8221;\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 &#8220;Let&#8217;s look&#8221;, and I loosened the screw to flip open the front of the box.\u00a0 Wow, a nest made of twigs built by a house wren last summer, almost completely filling the inside space.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/outdooredguys.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2977\" src=\"https:\/\/outdooredguys.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/1-1.jpg\" alt=\" 1 (1)\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a>I explained that the eggs are laid in a little depression at the back corner of the structure, out of reach of the probing arms of predators like squirrels and racoons.\u00a0 &#8220;Can we see the eggs?&#8221; they asked.\u00a0 &#8220;There won&#8217;t be any eggs, it&#8217;s winter &#8211; birds only lay eggs in spring and summer&#8221; and I began to remove the nest to prove it.\u00a0 &#8220;Look, there are 4 eggs&#8221; they shouted excitedly.\u00a0 &#8220;Don&#8217;t be silly&#8221; I began, but had to stop when I saw there were in fact 4 tiny wren eggs still in the nest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/outdooredguys.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/3-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2979\" src=\"https:\/\/outdooredguys.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/3-1.jpg\" alt=\" 3 (1)\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a>One egg had been pierced, the work of a competitor, maybe a house sparrow or even another wren.\u00a0 Both species have been the undoing of other birds that have taken up residence in our boxes.\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/outdooredguys.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/06\/if-you-build-it-they-will-come\/\" target=\"_blank\">chickadee<\/a> was killed by wrens last spring after completing nest construction and egg laying, and <a href=\"https:\/\/outdooredguys.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/06\/empty-nest-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">eastern bluebirds<\/a> were victimized in 2012.\u00a0 In nature it&#8217;s called competition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2980\" src=\"https:\/\/outdooredguys.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So I stuffed the twig structure back into the box, closed the door, and off we went in search of other great discoveries.\u00a0 Tomorrow I&#8217;ll show total surprise when we &#8220;re-discover&#8221;
