Custom Woodworking- TWJ 3EI / 3EB

This course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills related to cabinetmaking and furniture making through various hands-on projects. Students will gain a basic understanding of concepts used in custom woodworking such as shop and machine safety, using imperial measurement, dressing rough lumber, creating woodworking joints, sanding, finishing and materials used in the woodworking industry. Students will also learn how to interpret and create technical drawings, calculate the amount of material needed for a project, prepare estimates and woodworking machinery and hand tools as they work on their custom woodworking projects. Students will also have an opportunity to explore career opportunities in the field of custom woodworking.

 

GRADE 12

Custom Woodworking- TWJ 4EI / 4EB

This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills related to the planning, design, and construction of residential and/or commercial cabinets and furniture. Through hands-on activities, students will further develop their understanding of woodshop safety, the use of woodworking machines, hand tools and several other woodworking concepts. Students will gain a deeper understanding of wood as a building material by learning to identify and work with different species of lumber, manufactured panel products as well as, selecting and creating the most effective woodworking joints to be used in a project or product. This course provides students with the opportunity to gain experience building cabinets, furniture and other wooden items to industry standards as well as explore design considerations and factors when planning and designing custom furniture and cabinetry. Students will also expand their awareness of environmental issues in the field of custom woodworking and continue to develop their ability to interpret and create technical drawings.
