No matter what education you plan to pursue after high school &#8211; apprenticeship, college, university or workplace training &#8211; an environment major can help you focus on a future career.<\/p>\n<h3>A Specialist High Skills Major in environment offers:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>high school courses in Grade 11 and 12 tailored to the career you want to pursue<\/li>\n<li>the chance to work with industry leaders and experience cutting-edge training in the environment<\/li>\n<li>experience working in the sector you&#8217;re interested in, while you&#8217;re still in high school<\/li>\n<li>recognition on your high school diploma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The environment major includes the following components:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the environment major, you will take nine credits in grade 11 and 12:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four environment major credits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two English credit, one math credit and one science credit, each with activities focused on the environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two co-operative education credits to gain workplace experience that helps you refine, extend and practice your environment knowledge and skills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sector-recognized certifications and\/or training courses\/programs\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reach ahead experiences connected with the student\u2019s postsecondary plans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of a Sector-Partnered Contextualized Experience<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Sector-recognized certification and training<\/h3>\n<p>As part of the environment \u200bmajor, you will earn seven certifications, including the following four that are compulsory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>global positioning system<\/li>\n<li>standard first aid<\/li>\n<li>CPR, Level A<\/li>\n<li>hazardous materials &#8211; Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Future career paths for environment majors<\/h3>\n<p>For environment majors, possible careers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>apprenticeship<\/strong> \u2013 this sector does not yet offer apprenticeship opportunities<\/li>\n<li><strong>college<\/strong> \u2013 conservation and fishery officer, soil testing technologist, forest ecologist, land surveyor, biological technician<\/li>\n<li><strong>university<\/strong> \u2013 environmental biologist, waste diversion consultant, landscape architect, environmental and occupational toxicologist<\/li>\n<li><strong>entry level workplace<\/strong> \u2013 outdoor sport and recreation guide, wastewater treatment plant operator, recycled paper handler, recreation program leader<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Get more information\u200b<\/h3>\n<p>Call the <strong>guidance department<\/strong> at the following schools that offer the program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eds.wrdsb.ca\">Elmira District Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gps.wrdsb.ca\">Glenview Park Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hrh.wrdsb.ca\">Huron Heights Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kci.wrdsb.ca\">Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sss.wrdsb.ca\">Southwood Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Specialist High Skills Major allows you to focus on a career area that interests you while you earn your high school diploma.
