No matter what education you plan to pursue after high school &#8211; apprenticeship, college, university or workplace training &#8211; an information and communications technology major can help you focus on a future career.<\/p>\n<h3>A Specialist High Skills Major in information and communications technology offers:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>high school courses in Grade 11 and 12 tailored to the career you want to pursue<\/li>\n<li>the chance to gain &#8220;hands-on&#8221; experience in information and communications technology<\/li>\n<li>experience working in the sector you&#8217;re interested in, while you&#8217;re still in high school<\/li>\n<li>recognition on your high school diploma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The information and communications technology major includes the following components:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>In the information and communications technology major, you will take nine credits in Grade 11 and 12:\n<ul>\n<li>four information and communications technology major credits<\/li>\n<li>three other required credits including English, mathematics and a choice of business studies, science or the arts in Grade 11 or 12<\/li>\n<li>two co-operative education credits to gain workplace experience that helps you to refine, extend and practice your information and communications technology knowledge and skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sector-recognized certifications and\/or training courses\/programs (three compulsory and a choice of three electives)<\/li>\n<li>Experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector<\/li>\n<li>Reach ahead experiences connected with the student&#8217;s post-secondary plans<\/li>\n<li>Completion of a Sector-Partner Experience (SPE)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Sector-recognized certification and training:<\/h3>\n<p>As part of the information and communications technology major you will earn six certifications, including the following three that are compulsory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>standard first aid<\/li>\n<li>CPR, Level A<\/li>\n<li>hazardous materials &#8211; Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Future career paths for information and communications technology majors:<\/h3>\n<p>For information and communications technology majors, possible careers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>apprenticeship &#8211; computer network technician, help desk technology support analyst, telecommunications line and cable worker<\/li>\n<li>college &#8211; film and video camera operator, web designer and developer, systems testing technician, audio and video recording technician<\/li>\n<li>university &#8211; software or computer engineer, information systems analyst, software designer<\/li>\n<li>entry level workplace &#8211; desktop publishing operator, satellite dish installer, retail salesperson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Get more information:<\/h3>\n<p>Call the <strong>guidance department<\/strong> at the following schools that offer the program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chc.wrdsb.ca\">Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gci.wrdsb.ca\">Galt Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kci.wrdsb.ca\">Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/jam.wrdsb.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sir John A Macdonald Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wod.wrdsb.ca\">Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Specialist High Skills Major allows you to focus on a career area that interests you while you earn your high school diploma.
