If you want to build your career in Canada&#8217;s growing sports industry, then the sports major will appeal to you. No matter what education you plan to pursue after high school &#8211; apprenticeship, college, university or workplace training &#8211; a sports major can help you focus on a future career.<\/p>\n<h3>A Specialist High Skills Major in sports offers:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>high school courses in Grade 11 and 12 tailored to the career you want to pursue<\/li>\n<li>the chance to work with industry leaders and experience cutting-edge training in sports<\/li>\n<li>experience working in the sector you&#8217;re interested in, while you&#8217;re still in high school<\/li>\n<li>recognition on your high school diploma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The sports major includes the following five components:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>A bundle of nine Grade 11 or 12 credits that comprises:\n<ul>\n<li>four sports major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills<\/li>\n<li>three other required credits from the Ontario curriculum, in English, mathematics, and a choice of business students, science or social sciences and humanities<\/li>\n<li>two co-operative education credits tied to the sector<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Seven sector-recognized certifications and\/or training courses\/programs (four compulsory and a choice of three electives)<\/li>\n<li>Experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector<\/li>\n<li>Reach ahead experiences connected with the student&#8217;s post-secondary plans<\/li>\n<li>Completion of a Sector-Partner Experience (SPE)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Sector-recognized certification and training<\/h3>\n<p>As part of the sports major, you will earn seven certifications, including the following four which are compulsory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>standard first aid<\/li>\n<li>Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C<\/li>\n<li>Automated External Defibrillation (AED)<\/li>\n<li>generic instruction about the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Future career paths for sports majors<\/h3>\n<p>For sports majors, possible careers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>apprenticeship<\/strong> &#8211; special events coordinator<\/li>\n<li><strong>college<\/strong> &#8211; arena manager, broadcasting sports director, broadcast technician, film or video camera operator, recreation facility manager<\/li>\n<li><strong>university<\/strong> &#8211; athletic therapist, health and physical education teacher, kinesiologist<\/li>\n<li><strong>entry level workplace<\/strong> &#8211; athlete, coach, fitness\/sports instructor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Get more information<\/h3>\n<p>Call the <strong>guidance department<\/strong> at the following schools that offer the program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/chc.wrdsb.ca\">Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eci.wrdsb.ca\">Eastwood Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/eds.wrdsb.ca\">Elmira District Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/fhc.wrdsb.ca\">Forest Heights Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gci.wrdsb.ca\">Galt Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/grc.wrdsb.ca\">Grand River Collegiate Institute<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hrh.wrdsb.ca\">Huron Heights Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jhs.wrdsb.ca\">Jacob Hespeler Secondary School<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/phs.wrdsb.ca\">Preston High School<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Specialist High Skills Major allows you to focus on a career area that interests you while you earn your high school diploma.
