The Warblers are Back!

The first wave of Yellow-Rumped Warblers moved through here today, numbering around 20 or so. It was their call-notes that were heard first and a pair of binoculars confirmed them. They (along with Pine Warblers) are usually the first to return. This is a little earlier than most years, but their arrival marks the start […]

Book Review: “Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out” by April Pulley Sayre

We are big on reading here at Wrigley Corners.  Last year we received a number of great books (through participating in EcoSchools).  We enjoyed several so much that we thought it might be good to share them.  Sherry Stanbury, a teacher candidate from Queens University volunteered to review and post her thoughts on each and […]

Forest Heights at Wrigley Corners

Hello, Mrs. Miller here. I am with my second class of grade nine students this week at Wrigley Corners Outdoor Education Center. We spent the morning on a hike in Dryden Forest to study terrestrial ecology. The students took both biotic and abiotic measurements including: temperature, elevation, GPS, plant and insect counts. We are now […]

Bird count update

At Christmas time, Al Woodhouse at the Camp Heidelberg Outdoor Centre challenged me to see which one of us could see more species of birds on his centre’s property in 2012.  We started keeping track on January 1 and the year’s total now stands at: Al (Camp Heidelberg) – 47 Sean (Laurel Creek) – 46 My […]

Hespler at the pond… In March!

Hespler Public has braved these suddenly cold (though more seasonal) temperatures to do pond study at Wrigley corners. Air temperature is negative 0.5 and a nice sunny day. The water temperature is 13 degrees Celsius. Groups have been catching lots of leeches, red spotted newts, scuds and back-swimmers.

Instincts for Survival

Wrigley Corners recently went high tech with a 3G iPad. Hespler Public is here right now Playing Instincts for Survival. Here is a photo of some students running for their off-springs lives.

Spring Things…

I suspect we are being lulled into thinking this week that spring is here for good, when, in fact, we are likely to see the return of colder weather, and perhaps even some – well, you know – the white stuff. But the warmer weather has certainly brought prominence to several species we associate with […]

Hello from the Sugar Shack!

I am sitting in the sugar shack right now, after just getting the fire going to full-tilt. I brought my wireless router out to the shack and thought it might be neat to be the first to send a ‘sweet’ blog from the shack : ) To date, there has been 52L, but with the […]
