Ontario has a strong framework to address and follow up on lead exceedances. This framework includes strict monitoring and inspection requirements and engagement with the Local Medical Officer of Health and owners/operators of the facility showing the exceedance to resolve issues in a timely manner. Throughout the year and during inspections, MOECC staff review all adverse test results to ensure incidents have been appropriately addressed and to assess compliance with any corrective actions issued by the local Medical Officer of Health.
Facilities must take immediate corrective action at any tap or drinking fountain where a test result shows a lead exceedance. These actions could include increased flushing, replacing the fixture, installing a filter or other device that is certified for lead reduction, rendering the tap or fountain inaccessible to children by disconnecting or bagging, or any other measures as directed by the local Medical Officer or Health, until the issue is resolved.
