Connecting Reading and Writing: Poetry
Goals:
- Read and respond to poetry
- Consider the author’s purpose
April is Canada’s National Poetry Month!
This week we will read different poems and think about how authors convey emotion and meaning through poetry.
Poets think carefully about the words they use and how they put those words together when they write a poem. A poet’s carefully chosen words can help us understand their thoughts and feelings about a topic.
Read these two poems.
As you read, think about the feelings the author is trying to share.
April is a Dog’s Dream by Marilyn Singer
Poorly Dressed by Bruce Lansky (You can also listen to this poem.)
Choose one of the poems to think about and answer the question:
What feeling or emotion do you think the author is trying to convey? Explain your thinking.
Other Opportunities:
- Create an illustration for one of the poems we read today. Share the poem and your illustration with someone in your family.
- Keep on reading books you choose every day! When you find a good book, share a recommendation with the form My Book Recommendations.
