Reading: National Indigenous History Month
Goals:
- Learn more about Canada’s National Indigenous History Month
Every June Canadians celebrate National Indigenous History Month, which is an opportunity to honour the heritage, contributions and cultures of First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities across Canada. Canadians are also invited to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st each year.
Today, we will learn more about a few of the contributions Indigenous people have made to our world. Read about the inventions and discoveries made by Indigenous people in the article “Did You Know?”
After reading, create a mind map with “National Indigenous History Month” at the centre. Record one or two questions you have about this special month to start your mind map.
Keep your mind map for future lessons. As we continue learning, you will add more questions and information to your mind map.
June is also Pride Month. Read this article to learn more about Pride Month. We will spend time next week exploring identity and celebrating everyone’s uniqueness!
Other Opportunities:
- Keep on reading books you choose every day!
