Puzzles and Riddles
Learning Goals:
- Solve problems involving the multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers
- Develop and apply reasoning skills to make and test math predictions
- Communicate mathematical thinking orally and visually
The Puzzle:
Determine the numbers that go in the empty boxes to make this diagram correct:
Can you also complete the challenge if the top box starts as 30?
What about 38? 248?
Questions and Prompts to Support your Child:
- What strategies did you use to multiply and divide?
- What have you tried so far? What could we try together?
- (If the circle doesn’t end back at 8) – Let’s check back on what you did to see what led us here.
Extensions & Adaptations:
- If struggling with calculations, try starting with 4 instead of 8 (or have a calculator handy!)
- Take some time to figure out why this circle works out with ANY whole number in the top box – can you explain why?
