Last week Ms. Kelly’s five grade 7 classes from LBP PS in Waterloo, visited the Blair Outdoor Centre to study stream ecology.  We did a stream study in the morning -Blair Creek is a Class 1 cold-water stream – and an ecology hike around the property in the afternoon as well as the use of microscopes to study pond organisms.  The weather was great all week, and we had new species of migrating birds almost every day (white-throated sparrow, white-crowned sparrow, common yellowthroat, rose-breasted grosbeak).  On Friday, Colleen from 7A, wrote about her experiences – thanks Colleen!  All photos are by Addison – thanks!

Blair Outdoor Education Trip

Today our class sent to Blair Outdoor Education Centre.  First we spent our time to attach a bird house to a post that eventually a bird will take over and build its nest. We then carried the birdhouse and placed it in the woods.  Mr. Rasberry hopes a great crested flycatcher will nest there.

Next we went to the creek (which was my favourite part).  We borrowed rain boots if we didn’t bring any and headed down to the creek for a 3 minute walk.  There was a long, pretty, flowing river.  We caught different insects because we were split into different groups.  I caught a fish! (a sculpin)

That’s what we have done so far but I am sure that more fun is to come.  Thank you Peter for an awesome field trip so far, and I encourage that everyone comes to visit this wonderful place full of nature!   Colleen.
