Getting Started

Challenge your child or children to build a personal mini-library of books or other things to read (or listen to) they would like to read at home and share with others in your home. This might include revisiting a previously read book or magazine, looking at online collections, and sharing books with a sibling. See the list of possible online resources included below.

Questions and prompts to support your child:

  • What are some of your favourite books/authors?
  • Is there a book that you enjoyed that you would like to re-read?
  • What are some topics that you would like to learn more about?
  • What is at the top of your reading list? Why? Do you think we might find other books like this?
  • How could we organize these books/titles/topics?

Possible Sources of texts for reading:

  • Favourite books you own
  • Favourite books of siblings
  • Boardgame directions – to get ready for a family game night (reading them aloud is great, too!)
  • Cookbooks
  • Books or other reading material in your first language
  • WRDSB Library Learning Commons (sign in to Virtual Library Elementary with your PAL and Password)
  • Scholastic Free Online Collection
  • KidLitTV
