Reading for Understanding

Readers ask lots of questions! As you read a book today, or listen to a story being read to you, be curious. What are you wondering? If you are reading or listening to a story, you might ask yourself:

  • Why did that character do that?
  • What might happen next?

If you are reading a nonfiction book, you might ask different questions about the topic.

If you are reading to your child, stop and ask some questions together along the way!

Use some sticky notes, or some scrap paper. Write down some of your questions as you read or listen. Talk about them with someone at your house. Did you find out all of the answers as you read? Do you need to do some more reading to find some answers? Where could you look?
