Fiction Writing

Goals

  • review the genre of fiction
  • recognize some of the sub-genres of fiction

The Learning Task

Last week our literacy prompts focused on genres of nonfiction writing and poetry (personal memoir, informational writing, persuasive writing, procedural writing, poetry). It is important to recognize a genre of writing so we know what characteristics to expect when we are reading and the features to incorporate when we are writing.

Today we focus on the genre of fiction. You are probably very familiar with fiction writing. It can be found in the picture books and novels you read to mention a couple of forms.

There are many subgenres of fiction. Watch this video to review some of them:

Your turn! For today’s task, brainstorm a list of fiction texts that have impacted you as a reader; think about what the texts had in common and write a second list.

Daily task! Don’t forget to engage with your Writer’s Notebook: Creating a Place for Reflection
