Listening, Viewing and Responding to Texts

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. It’s an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the cultural richness and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples.

Families:

Invite your child to think of things they think they know about Indigenous People and National Indigenous Peoples Day. Share with your child what you know. What questions do they have? What question do you have? Sharing your thinking in a conversation will set the stage for reading and learning more together.

Together with your child, visit the Government of Canada website to learn more about National Indigenous Peoples Day.

After reading the short passage of this non-fiction text, talk together about what you learned. You might also want to talk about what questions you have now. We will learn more about this important day and the people it celebrates through more stories this week.
