Reflecting and Sharing

Reading books together serves many purposes. We are entertained by them, we learn new information from them, they make us think about new ideas and perspectives, and they can even help us learn to be better readers and writers.

Families:

Enjoy re-reading some favourite books together. You might enjoy listening to some books together that have been posted here. As you read, encourage your child to talk about what they love about what the authors and illustrators do. Some things they might notice are:

  • “just right” words that paint a picture in the reader’s mind
  • many details in the pictures to help tell the story
  • action words that help the reader to “see” what is happening
  • bolded text that makes certain words stand out and tell the reader how to read the words
  • Speech bubbles or thought bubbles that help readers to get to know characters better
  • Repeated words or phrases that help the reader understand the message

There might be other things your child notices, too! Is there something that your child notices that they would like to try to do as a writer? Is there something that your child notices that would help them as a reader? Noticing what authors and illustrators do, can help us to set goals for ourselves.

We will come back to these ideas tomorrow!
