As we learned yesterday, storytelling was, and continues to be, an important part of First Nations culture.

Families:

Telling stories is a great way of continuing to develop literacy skills – and your child will probably have a lot of fun at the same time!

Help your child to create a “Storytelling Bag” to help them tell stories of their own. There are all sorts of things they might collect in nature…stones, pieces of bark, flowers, feathers, shells. What other small items might be interesting to put into their bag?

Encourage your child to make up their own stories using a few objects from the bag. Sharing family stories is another great way to engage in storytelling with your child. Your child will also enjoy hearing stories that you have to share! Your child will learn words and develop language skills from the stories and conversations you share together.

Have fun!
