Listening, Viewing and Responding to Texts

Connecting with characters in things we read and listen to help us to think about our own lives and experiences.

Families:

Ask your child to think about what makes them who they are. You might ask, “What makes you YOU?”

With your child, listen to the book Looking Like Me by Walter Dean Myers and illustrated by Christopher Myers. As you listen together, find out what makes the character in the book who they are.

Below is an example of a poem that I wrote to share some of what makes me who I am. Perhaps your child would like to write a poem to share a little bit about what makes them who they are. Who might they want to share this poem with?

I am me.
I am a daughter, a sister,
A wife, a mother.
I am an aunt, a niece,
A granddaughter…but not a grandmother.
I am a teacher, a friend,
A pianist, a gardner.
I like sunrises and sunsets,
And sparkling snow.
I am a singer, a reader,
A daydreamer, too.
I am kind, I am loving,
I am funny and brave.
I am curious, I am strong,
I am me.
