Idea Generation

Goals

The Learning Task

The first step in the writing process is to generate ideas, or a range of writing topics that you can come back to and explore in more detail. These ideas are called your writing territories*.

Let’s explore a specific way to come up with writing territory ideas by exploring your personal Life Map. With a personal Life Map or Timeline, you map out life events that are significant to you i.e., getting a new animal, the arrival of a new sibling, travel, finding a sport that you love. Life is full of high points and low points, allowing your Life Map to reflect the full range of your experiences will offer you more writing ideas, or writing territories, for future use.
