Sometimes it’s all about the simplest things. Whenever we’re struggling, it’s great to go back to basics. So in an effort to keep it super simple, here are some easy ideas that kids love. Most of all, they will appreciate spending a little time together 💙

Experiment with your child using safe textures on their skin. Ask: “Do you feel the fluffy pillow? How does it feel?” Pause and wait for them to respond. You can talk about what you’re feeling, too. “My scarf feels smooth on my skin.” If you are able to venture outside, there are lots of interesting textures to explore there too (e.g., tree bark, concrete, grass). Try re-using a piece of tin foil to press onto an interesting texture – notice the marks it made! Is there a pattern? Sometimes this can inspire some terrific drawings, too.

Children learn through their senses. When you talk with your child about different textures, you’re helping them make connections between words and feelings. These connections lay the foundation for reading and math.
