SBI 4U – Biology:
Mathematical description of how to estimate a population
Students participate in a bird banding demonstration, a method used to track changes in bird populations around the world. They are also introduced to relevant legislation around the protection of wildlife and discuss both local and global population declines of birds. We then observe a wild population of color-banded birds and use a modified ‘mark- recapture’ method to estimate local populations of Black- capped Chickadees.
Key Concepts:
- Bird banding
- Scientific Survey methods
- Legislation
- Causes for population change
- Influence of biotic and abiotic factors
- Cycling of Matter
- Avian life history
