Connecting Reading and Writing: Days of Significance

Goals:

  • Explore the Library Learning Commons research databases
  • Learn more about significant days in our community

Every year many important celebrations and traditions are marked around the world, and also right here in Canada. Some of the ‘days of significance’ observed in our community include Vaisakhi, Vesak, Ramadan, Passover, and Easter.

Choose a ‘day of significance’ you would like to research. You can choose any special day – it might be one important to your family, or one you would just like to learn more about.

Use the WRDSB Library Learning Commons to research the ‘day of significance’ you have chosen.

First:

Login to the Library Learning Commons using your PAL*. (see a demonstration).

Second:

Explore these two research tools: Britannica Elementary (demonstration) and Gale – Kids Infobits (demonstration) to find out more about your topic.

Third:

Share some of the interesting things you learn with a friend, relative, caring adult, etc.

Other Opportunities:

Ask your parents or caregiver for information about a day that is significant to your family. Share what you find out in the padlet. Some questions you might ask: What makes this day important to our family? How do we observe this day?

* A student’s PAL username and password can be obtained from your child’s teacher. Leave a message with contact information on the teacher’s WRDSB voicemail through the school’s phone number. Alternately, email your child’s teacher using the format: firstname_lastname@wrdsb.ca
