Connecting Reading and Writing: Historical Heroes

Goals:

  • Generate ideas for a personal inquiry

Yesterday, you viewed several videos of peoples from Canada’s past who made significant contributions to our country. You also wrote about the most interesting video you watched.

Your Task:

Make a t-chart with one column labeled “I notice” and the second column labeled “I wonder”.

Rewatch your favourite video from yesterday. (Or choose a new one to view.)

As you watch the video, think about:

  • things you notice, (e.g. facts from the clip, people, places, names) and
  • things you wonder about (e.g. questions you have, words you don’t know, record what you want to know more about).

You can watch the video a few times to catch all the details.

Read through your “I wonder” column. Make a star beside the items you are most curious about.
Make sure your starred items are written as questions.

A few example question frames might help you get started:

  • I wonder why ___ decided to ___?
  • I wonder how ___ felt about ___?
  • I wonder when ___ knew ___?
  • I wonder what it was like when ___?

Keep your t-chart and your questions handy. Tomorrow we will begin to look for information to answer your questions!
