Goals:

  • Read and respond to an Ojibway story

The Ojibway are an Indigenous people in Canada and the United States who are part of a larger group known as the Anishinabe.

Today we will learn more about the Ojibway culture through the story “The Lily Root”.

As you read the story, think about what important lesson the story can teach us.

First, read or listen to “The Lily Root”.

After you read, think about Old John, Emily and Hattie.
What lesson do you think Old John wanted the girls to learn? Use your own ideas and details from the text to support your thinking.

Share this story and your thinking with a family member.

Finally, think about what you learned about Ojibway culture from this story. Add new ideas and questions to the mind map you created for National Indigenous History Month.

Other Opportunities:

Note to families: Online articles can be challenging to read. If your child is logged into their WRDSB Google Account, they can use the Read and Write for Google Chrome plugin to have online text read to them.
