Connecting Reading and Writing: Days of Significance
Goals:
- Create a poster sharing your learning about Indigenous peoples and advertising National Indigenous Peoples Day
Sunday, June 21 is Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day – a day where Canadians are encouraged to “celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis!” Have a look at the poster created by the Government of Canada to share this special day with the public.
Look back across the many stories, videos and readings you have done this month as you learned more about the Indigenous people. The mind map you have been creating will be a good place to start!
What are some of the most interesting facts and ideas you have learned about Indigenous people?
What do you think it is important for other people to know?
Today, design a poster to advertise National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Your poster should:
- share the date of National Indigenous Peoples Day, and
- share some of the important information you have learned about Indigenous Peoples this month.
When your poster is complete – find a place for it to be displayed. (e.g. you could hang your poster in a window or by a mailbox)
Other Opportunities:
- Keep on reading books you choose every day!
Note to families: Online articles can be challenging to read. If your child is logged into their WRDSB Google Account, they can use the Read and Write for Google Chrome plugin to have online text read to them.
