Media

Goals

  • identify and explain how chosen media techniques enhance a message

The Learning Task

What we know about media:

  • All media is constructed and created for an intended purpose and audience
  • Media contains beliefs and value messages.
  • Each person interprets messages differently

As the death toll approaches almost 100 000 people from COVID19 in the United States, the New York Times ran the names of people who have died from the virus on their front page and continued on three pages inside the newspaper’s main news section.

Your turn! How did the media technique of minimalism (i.e., the impact of using a single person’s name) and maximalism (i.e, the impact of viewing many names together) make you feel when viewing the front page? Which technique impacted you the most? How did combining the two opposite techniques work together? What is the intended message of the front page of the newspaper?

Express your thinking and feelings in a form of your choice and consider sharing with someone in your home.

Daily task! Don’t forget to engage with your Writer’s Notebook: Creating a Place for Reflection
