Media

Goals:

  • critically examine media images to extrapolate the main idea
  • determine persuasive techniques

The Learning Task

Did you know that political cartoons can be found in daily newspapers (in print and on-line) in the editorial pages? Political cartoons can be very funny and often use satire to make a point. A good political cartoon makes you think about current events and the artist is usually trying to persuade you to a particular point of view. Please view the political cartoons from the Toronto Star, Monday, May 9, 2016, and the second found in the Toronto Star on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. Both examples are the work of Theo Moudakis.

  • What are the events that inspired each cartoon?
  • Explain the message of each political cartoon.
  • What do you think are the tools of the political cartoonist?
  • How did the artist modify the political cartoon to include the new heroes of today?
  • Who are your superheroes? Create an image (drawing, photograph, collage, other ) to represent them.

Daily! Don’t forget to engage with your writer’s notebook: Creating a Place for Reflection

Note: please see the information in this lesson for guidance.

Here are some Writer’s Notebook samples that some intermediate students in the WRDSB have shared over the last few days:

“We just need to be patient at this time. Which means we have to do what is right for the community and the world, like staying home and social distancing etc. And that we can get through hard times by taking small steps.”

“I am a competitive dancer and some of my competitions have been cancelled, but my studio is running online classes. I am not really that worried, I just want things to go back to normal.”

“Without school (as much as I love it) I have found that I have been able to care for myself and family more often. I have been feeling more content, I have been waking up at times that fit with my sleep schedule, making me less tired. I have also found that I have been able to eat healthier and maintain a healthy routine in my day to day life. As much as I love school, I feel happier doing it online. I am a naturally introverted person, meaning I don’t like being around others as often, especially when there are lots of people. It makes me feel uncomfortable and anxious. I like being able to sit on my bed with my sister and help her with her kindergarten worksheets while being able to continue my work online.”

If you would like to share your thinking, thoughts and wonderings with other students in the Waterloo Region District School Board, please share your journal entry using this link. Your entry may be chosen to share within our system. This is NOT a requirement and it is your personal choice to share.
