Goals

  • Read an image and determine important information
  • Synthesize background knowledge with new learning

The above image was tweeted out by the federal Minister of Indigenous Services, Marc Miller on March 18, 2020, and was directed towards Indigenous communities. (Thank you to Dr. Angela Nardozi for this idea.)

The Learning Task

Active your background knowledge:

  • What do you already know about Indigenous Peoples in Canada?
  • What is a boil water advisory?

Reading an image:

  • What new information does the above image provide to you about some Indian Reverses in Canada?
  • How is this consistent, or inconsistent, with what you know about the treatment and living conditions of some Indigenous populations in Canada?

Synthesizing information:

  • During times of crisis do existing inequities become more apparent in society?
  • Think of other vulnerable populations who are being impacted by COVID19. Is it more difficult for some groups of people to cope with our new realities than others with more resources and tools at their disposal?
  • Think about distant learning, might this be harder for some students than others?

Represent the consolidation of your thinking and learning in a format of your choice.

Here is a Writer’s Notebook entry that an intermediate student in the WRDSB shared yesterday:

“At this moment, we need to all help each other. I would like to tell you that you are an amazing person and even if I don’t know, we are all going through the same situation right now. So good for you, for waking up each day and knowing that we can get through this. It’s only a matter of time and if we all relax, stay home and keep a smile on our face we can all get through this together…WE CAN DO THIS!!”

Daily! Don’t forget to engage with your Writer’s Notebook: Creating a Place for Reflection

Note: please see the information in this lesson for guidance.

If you would like to share your thinking, thoughts and wonderings with other students in the Waterloo Region District School Board as above, please share your journal entry using this form. Your entry may be chosen to share within our system. This is NOT a requirement and it is your personal choice to share.
