The Learning Task

View the following video clip from CBC Kids News: When Will We Get A Coronavirus Vaccine?

While watching the video clip consider the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of a vaccine?
  • Which vaccines already exist to prevent which viruses?
  • What is a “trial” and why is it important?

Scientists in Canada have always contributed to research that benefits the world’s health. Explore Innovative Medicines Canada to discover and celebrate Canada’s greatest scientific achievements. Skim and scan the information to discover what the “Toronto Method” and the Salk vaccine is and why it is important (Hint: Look at the year, 1955)

Write a TED Talk that synthesizes your learning from today’s viewing and reading. Present your TED Talk to your family and friends, orally or in a digital form. Or, write a Top 10 List of the most important learnings from your viewing and reading today to share with your family and friends.

Daily task! Don’t forget to engage with your Writer’s Notebook: Creating a Place for Reflection

Note: please see the information in this lesson for guidance.

Here are some Writer’s Notebook entries that intermediate students in the WRDSB have shared:

“My family is lucky that we have a place to get some exercise without having to go into public areas and risking getting the virus. We also have board games to keep us entertained and good devices and the Internet to do some educational things and access school things that will be coming out. We can also skype with some friends and play board games with them. I’m glad that my parents aren’t healthcare workers or are getting exposed to the virus but they are still working.”

“Care for others even though you have to be distant with them.”
