The Learning Task

Of the 14 provincial and national Chief Medical Health Officers, 7 are women including Canada’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Teresa Tam. In these unique times, the Chief Medical Officers regularly appear on television to explain complex medical realities to Canadians and offer support and guidance to everyday Canadians.

In your opinion, is it reasonable, and/or surprising that half of the Chief Medical Health Officers in Canada are women? Why or why not?

Read the following article, Canada’s chief medical officers puts woman’s leadership in the spotlight. While reading the article, consider:

  • Why is it noteworthy that 7 women are among the Chief Medical Officers in Canada? Should it be noteworthy?
  • In your opinion, would a male Chief Medical Officer’s clothing be noted or discussed? Is it appropriate or relevant that our female Chief Medical Officers clothing ignites discussion?
  • How are female Chief Medical Officers inspiring for women in girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs?
  • Do barriers exist for females in STEM programs today?

Research one Woman in Science that interests you and summarize important ideas in a form of your choice: Consider creating a poster that highlights your chosen scientist and their accomplishments; or, create a mind map linking important facts about your chosen scientist.
