Reading

Goals

  • read a newspaper article and create meaning
  • make personal connections to a text

The Learning Task

As we reviewed this week, the month of June is recognized in Canada as Pride month and National Indigenous History Month. One’s sexual orientation, gender orientation and race represent significant aspects of an individual’s identity. In the last installation of The Amazing Race Canada an Indigenous, 2-Spirited couple won the adventure television show.

Your Turn! Read the following article: Indigenous 2-Spirited Couple Wins The Amazing Race Canada and consider the following:

Before Reading:

  • How do the text features of a newspaper article help to guide your understanding of what you are reading?
  • What do you know about Indigenous Peoples in Canada?
  • What do you know about the LGBTQ2S community?
  • Why is it important to have the ability to fully represent your identity?

During Reading:

  • Keep track of the words or phrases that make resonate with you: What makes you wonder? What surprised you? What do you need to learn more about?

After Reading:

  • The article explained that some people felt that using the spotlight of The Amazing Race Canada to raise awareness about issues they believed in (water conservation and equity, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) was too political. Do you feel that The Amazing Race Canada was an appropriate platform to use to bring awareness to important topics? Why or why not? How do you draw attention to things you believe in and feel others should know more about?
  • If you were to use articles of clothing to express your identity like Anthony Johnson and Dr. James Makokis did during The Amazing Race Canada how would you look?

Represent your thinking and learning in a form of your choice and share with a member of your household.
