Reading

Wednesday, April 8 is the International Day of Pink. It is a day to stand up against homophobic, transphobic, and all forms of bullying. It is a day to stand in solidarity with our 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Goals

  • think critically about reading to respond to questions about a text

The Learning Task

Read the following article: Bullied Student Tickled Pink by School Classmates T-Shirt Campaign and think about the following questions as you read:

  • How might school be challenging for students who stand out for any reason?
  • What are some of the differences that people at your school are teased/harassed about?
  • Do you feel there might be a new sense of acceptance and tolerance in general after surviving a pandemic? Why or why not?
  • When David Shepperd and Travis Price saw what was happening and acted, some people said they were “bystanders” and others said they were “upstanders”. What word do you think captures their actions best?
  • If you have materials available, consider drawing a chalk rainbow outside or rainbow picture to hang in your window.
  • Consider: How might these subtle messages help someone?

Daily! Don’t forget to engage with your Writer’s Notebook: Creating a Place for Reflection
