Running ShoeInvestigations

Instructions:

  1. Make a paper ruler like the one attached or cut out the one attached.
  2. Have your child use the paper ruler to measure the lengths of different shoes in your home.
  3. Have your child record the measurements on the attached sheet or on a piece of paper.

Modifications:

If a student is used to using a standard ruler have them measure the shoes in centimetres.

Talking About It:

  1. How did you make sure your measurement was right? (e.g., putting the edge of the ruler at the beginning of the shoe, making sure the ruler was flat etc.)
  2. What did you do if the shoe was longer than the ruler?
  3. How did you know who had the longest shoe?
  4. How did you know who had the shortest shoe?
  5. Which shoe is the closest to your shoe?
