Research suggests that listening to music can stimulate the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, help boost our mood, manage our emotions, and even reduce pain.

Create a Purposeful Playlist

What music makes you happy? What music wakes you up or energizes you?

Create a list of songs to boost your mood. Then play one of those songs and pay attention to how the music affects you.

  • Does it make you feel better?
  • Is it a certain style of music that is helpful, or is it a certain artist, or the words in the song?
  • How do the vibrations of the music play a role?
  • Try singing along or dancing – how does this change how you feel?

You can also try creating a different list of songs for a different emotion, maybe one that helps you vent frustration or calms you down. Listen to a song from this new list and pay attention to how it makes you feel.

Intentionally selecting the music you listen to can be a really helpful way to feel more in control of your feelings.
