Frequently Asked Co-op Questions
Do I get paid for working at my placement?
- In most cases, students do not receive payment for their participation in Co-operative Education. There may be exceptional circumstances where a student might be paid at their placement.
What kind of training will I get before my placement?
- All Co-op students will be trained on topics such as basic safety, expectations and work habits, confidentiality and ethics. The employer provides job-specific training as part of the placement.
When can I plan to take Co-op?
- Co-op can take place from Summer School after grade 10 though grades 11 and 12. Most programs last one complete semester (or July for Summer Co-op). You may choose to take multiple semesters of Co-op.
How does a placement fit into my school schedule?
- Typically, you will spend half your day in school and the other half on the job site, although work schedules can be very flexible. Some students spend a full day in Co-op.
How do I get to and from my placement each day?
- You will need to arrange your own transportation back and forth from your placement. We strive to ensure your placement is as close to your school as possible. Co-op teachers will assist you with planning your transportation.
How do I find a placement?
- Your Co-op teacher will work with you to find a placement from those employers who have openings. You will have to submit a resume and have an interview with the prospective employer. As part of your in-class sessions, you will learn how to build a great resume and do practice interviews to prepare for meeting your potential Co-op employer.
Do I receive a mark for my Co-op course and placement?
- Yes. Your Co-op teacher will work with the employer to come up with learning goals. Your teacher, with the input of the employer, will evaluate regularly how things are going, identifying areas of improvement. At the end of the placement, you will receive a mark that goes on your transcript.
