A silhouette image of a child jumping rope. Skill Development: Targeting a Specific Skill

Jumping rope is an excellent cardio workout and has been an activity that children and adults have been enjoying for years. It requires only a rope and a space to jump. Some people use a hula hoop to practice jumping and to add some variety, as well. No rope? No problem. You can have fun practicing your jumping skills, and doing other jumping games, or challenges with lines on the ground or no equipment at all.

Challenges for Beginner Jumpers

  • Jump with the rope on the ground. Jump forward over the rope. Jump backward. Jump side to side.
  • Tie the rope to a table leg, and have someone wiggle the other end of the rope like a snake. Try to jump over it.
  • Practice turning the rope and jumping forwards and backwards.

  • Try jumping on one foot, then the other.
  • Jump with two feet, crossing your arms with the rope.

Challenges and trick for Advanced Jumpers

  • Turn the rope so it is slightly off the ground and jump (you will need to turn the rope faster to be able to do this trick!).
  • Jump and turn, keep jumping and turning until you have made a full circle. How many circles can you make?
