Listening, Viewing and Responding to Texts

Stories are entertaining to read and to listen to. They also help us to learn. Stories have always been an important way of teaching for many First Nations people, and storytelling is still very important today. There is a lot we can learn from the stories of Indigenous people.

Families:

The Ojibway are an Indigenous people in Canada and the United States who are part of a larger group known as the Anishinabe.

Today we will learn more about the Ojibway culture through the story “The Lily Root”.

Before you listen, invite your child to think of some things that are beautiful, but not very useful, and some things that aren’t very beautiful, but are very useful. How many things can you think of together?

As you listen to the story with your child, encourage your child to think about what important lesson the grandfather wants his grandson to learn.

Enjoy talking together about the story and what the grandfather wants his grandson to learn.
