Listening and Responding to Reading

This book is the true story of the legendary goalie, Jacques Plante. No amount of teasing or bullying can distract Jacques from his childhood passion for hockey. In 1959 he became the first player to wear a mask regularly, changing the game for all time.

Families:

Talk with your child about what it means to “stand up for yourself”. Sometimes it is difficult to do something that you believe is right for you, when it seems as though you are the only one. That is what this hockey player does – even though lots of people make fun of him.

Together with your child, listen to That’s Not Hockey! By Andree Poulin and Illustrated by Felix Girard

Many characters in the book tease and make fun of Jacques Plante. Ask your child why they think they do that? Why doesn’t Jacques listen to them?
