Given a map on which to plan a new community for 100 000 people, students are challenged to allocate space for housing, industry, commerce, farming, and the environment. Different models of land use are presented, and students need to decide which plans reflect their vision of a successful community.
Notes for teachers:The program will give students the guidelines needed to plan their communities, however, the actual urban planning part will take place back at school. Students will have maps divided into one hundred squares. Students will need to allocate each of those squares to a particular land-use. The final product will be a map of a city colour coordinated for different uses. Teachers will need to allocate a few class periods for these activities. |
