There are 4 OYAP pathway options to help you pursue a skilled trade.

OYAP Pathway Which pathway best describes you?
OYAP Participant
  • I’m interested in working with my hands but I don’t have a specific trade in mind.
  • I’m interested in a trade but haven’t tried it before.
  • I want to try a skilled trade career.
OYAP Apprenticeship
  • I’m in Co-op, an OYAP participant, and want to pursue an apprenticeship with my Co-op employer.

or

  • There is no Accelerated OYAP Level 1 or Trade Union Apprenticeship program available for the trade I’m interested in but still want to get a head start on my apprenticeship.
Accelerated OYAP Level 1
  • I have experience, an employer wanting to sign me as an apprentice, and want to get a accelerate my apprenticeship to the next level!
Trade Union Apprenticeship Programs
  • I want to pursue an apprenticeship, don’t have an employer, but know 100% what I want to do.

1. OYAP Participant

(Semester 1 and/or 2)

An OYAP Participant is as student in Co-op who chooses one of the 144 apprenticeable trades as their Co-op placement.  Students will be provided PPE, safety training, and legally allowed to try a skilled trade.  This is a great option for exploring a skilled trade.  Students must complete their OYAP form to be an OYAP participant.  All Co-op teachers have access to the form.

Target Group Requirements/Timeline Outcome
  • Grade 11, 12, or 12+ students
  • (Including grade 10 summer school)
  • Take Co-op in either semester 1, semester 2, or both.
  • Gain hands-on experience in a skilled trade.
  • Make industry contacts.

2. OYAP Apprenticeship

(Semester 1 and/or 2)

This is for students that are already an OYAP participant, but their employer is willing to sign a Registered Training Agreement (RTA) to make them an OYAP Apprentices.  This allows a Co-op student to start earning hours towards their apprenticeship during their Co-op placement.

Target Group Requirements/Timeline Outcome
  • Grade 11, 12, or 12+ students
  • (Including grade 10 summer school)
  • Take Co-op in either semester 1, semester 2, or both.
  • Ask your Co-op employer if they’re willing to sign you as an OYAP Apprentice.
  • Ask your Co-op teacher for additional information and the paperwork.
  • Gain hands-on experience in a skilled trade.
  • Make industry contacts.
  • Start your apprenticeship and earn hours towards it while still in high school.

3. Accelerated OYAP Level 1 – Dual Credit

(Semester 2 only)

This program is for students 100% committed to pursuing a specific trade and have an employer licensed in their trade willing to sign an OYAP registered training agreement (RTA).  Students will be in full-time Co-op at their home school, earn hours towards their apprenticeship, and complete their level 1 in-school training at Conestoga College.

  • 309A – Electrician
  • 403A – General Carpenter
  • 429A – General Machinist 
  • 306A – Plumber
  • 313A – Refrigeration & A/C Systems Mechanic
  • 310T – Truck & Coach Technician
Target Group Requirements/Timeline Outcome
  • Grade 12, or 12+ students
  • Must have a Registered Training Agreement (RTA) with an employer licensed in their desired trade.
  • Only runs in Semester 2
  • Students must be enrolled in full-time Co-op in Sem 2.
  • Students must be graduating in June or already graduated.
  • Prior experience is recommended.
  • Start your apprenticeship and earn hours towards it while still in high school.
  • Complete your apprenticeship level 1 training.

4. Trade Union Apprenticeship Programs

(Semester 2 only)

These programs are for students 100% committed to pursuing an apprenticeship after graduation and don’t already have industry connections.  Students spend the entire second semester at the union hall and working with local contractors.  Each program takes 1-6 students a year.

  • 309A Electrician – IBEW Local 804
  • 306A Plumber – UA Local 527 *New
  • 450A Construction Craft Worker – Liuna Local 837 (Coming Soon)
Target Group Requirements/Timeline Outcome
  • Grade 12, or 12+ students
  • Interviews mid-December
  • Only runs in Semester 2
  • Students must be enrolled in full-time Co-op in Sem 2.
  • Students must be graduating in June or already graduated.
  • Students must have a means of transportation to/from multiple job sites.
  • Prior experience is beneficial.
  • Seamless transition from school to work in a trade union.
  • Gain hands-on experience and multiple safety certifications in a skilled trade.
  • Start your apprenticeship and earn hours towards it.
