Generating and Collecting Ideas

Writers often use ideas that come from real people and real memories in their lives.

Listen to the story A Chair For My Mother written by Vera B. Williams. In the story, the girl’s Mom is very important to her. She tells lots of memories about her Mom and about times with her Mom.

Collect some ideas about important people and memories in your life.

Families:

Help your child to make a list of all of the people in their life who are important to them. Help your child to list a special memory associated with each person. Writing these ideas down will help your child to “collect” them for another time.

Talking about these memories is also a great way of collecting these ideas in our minds. You could take turns telling stories that begin with “Do you remember the time when…”

The memories of people and events that are recalled might even turn into a story or another piece of writing some day!
